The Royal Family confirmed on Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II, who had been suffering health issues since last October, has passed away in Scotland at the age of 96.

The Royal Family posted on Twitter, “The Queen passed away peacefully in Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this tonight and will travel to London tomorrow.

According to Buckingham Palace, her immediate relatives hurried to her bedside as medics grew “concerned” about her health on Thursday. Harry and Meghan Markle, her grandson and his wife, who had a confrontation with the Palace in front of the public, flew in from Canada.

The Queen was instructed to rest before a scheduled meeting with her top political advisers on Wednesday, according to news agency AFP. At her Scottish Highlands hideaway, Balmoral, the day before, Queen hosted audiences for outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his chosen successor, Liz Truss.

The Queen withdrew from numerous public appearances and showed signs of obvious frailty in recent months. She had started using a cane to walk, and a motorised buggy was used to transport her around the Chelsea Flower Show.

To commemorate the Queen’s accession to the British monarchy 70 years ago, the UK gathered together in June for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Prince Phillip, her spouse, passed away in 2017 at the age of 99, two months shy of becoming 100.
