According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, there are too many people but not enough jobs at the company. Additionally, he counselled staff to work more productively and to focus on ways to enhance their offerings and serve customers. Google is reportedly now informing staff that they may be let go.

Some of Google’s top executives, per the story, have ordered staff to either show results or get ready for “blood on the streets.” In essence, the management were saying that if workers didn’t step up their game, they should prepare for layoffs. Additionally, these executives said that the upcoming quarterly profits report will determine whether or not layoffs would take place.

At Google, things haven’t been great for a while. The software giant imposed a hiring freeze a month ago because of the continued economic downturn. Employees at Google were worried even though layoffs were not openly discussed at the time. This is also a result of a number of other Big Tech firms, such Netflix and Microsoft. Microsoft recently let go of close to 2000 workers, perhaps as a cost-saving strategy.

Last month, Google CEO Eric Schmidt urged staff to work harder and solicited ideas on how to produce “better outcomes faster.” According to Pichai, “there are valid worries that our overall productivity is below where it should be with the head count we have.”

Google recently stopped hiring for two weeks while it reviewed its personnel and decided what to do next. Later on, the corporation decided to prolong the hiring ban.
